The Monas

I went on a school trip with my kids yesterday to The Monas (The National Monument). It is the symbol of Jakarta. The building is a golden torch on the top of a huge marble column. You can see it from a two or three miles distance. The trip was a touch boring though. There's not that much to see once you're in there. Lots of open (wasted) space, which you tend to notice in such an over-crowded city such as Jakarta.

As you can see from the photos, it is stinking hot here at the moment and very smoggy! The view from the top (which, thankfully, after walking up numerous flights of stairs, you can get to from an elevator!) is a 360 degree view of the city- but it was very smoggy, so not the greatest of photo opportunities!
