Traffic was a NIGHTMARE to cross town to the station. A 30 minute journey took us one and a half hours ....After a manic run for over a km (yes, really - dragging two kids and suitcases this far was not fun!) from the car park to our second class AC cabin, we made it with just seconds to spare as our train literally pulled out of the station just as Andrew jumped on with the last of the bags (not stressful much...!)
The cabin we had booked was piled to the ceiling with storage bedding (?!), so a kind old Indian man from Delhi let us share his 4 berth cabin (little did he know that we had a little four year old who likes to sing and chat non-stop!). The train was pretty manky but clean enough for us, and the girls loved the fact that they could sit or lie on the top bunks and watch the world go by.
Andrew was in his element - this train ride was what he had been waiting for, and he spent the majority of the journey standing/hanging out of the open carriage door, getting wind burned and taking videos and photos of our almost 4 hour journey winding up 5000 ft through glorious mountains and tropical forests to Pune.
See the open door below - this is where Andrew stood, whilst I looked after the crazies!!
The train only stopped at about 5 stations in the almost 4 hours we were travelling, but at one of the stations, the train overshot the station by about 100 metres, so the passengers all had to get off and walk across the live rails to the station! And vice versa. With all their luggage. Andrew has video footage of it. I will see what I can upload!
The time went by amazingly quickly though - the girls were fine, but Juliette really did not draw breath for the whole time she was on the train.
